SCHOOL CLOSURES

          HIGHLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE: G20

June 18, 2010

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The G20 Summit will be held on June 26th and 27th, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in downtown Toronto.

Some schools and communities in the general area close to the G20 Summit venue may experience a significant impact from increased traffic restrictions due to motorcades, highway and road closures, ferry service disruptions and possible public demonstrations throughout the week.

In consultation with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), with whom the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) shares bussing services, it has been decided to cancel all student transportation (school buses and vans) on Friday, June 25th.

Due to the proximity of Island Public/Natural Science School to the Summit, as a precaution it has been determined that the school will close on Thursday, June 24th and Friday, June 25th.

The TDSB has a team in place that is working with the G20 Summit’s Integrated Security Unit (ISU). They will continue to monitor the effects of security measures on schools in the days leading up to the Summit.

If it is required that Island Public/Natural Science School be closed earlier in the week prior to Thursday, June 24th, an alternate site has been identified for staff and students to attend, if necessary.

Prior to relocation to the alternate site, if required, we will notify parents/guardians, staff and the school community as soon as possible.

We are committed to keeping you informed. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

For additional information please visit the TDSB public website at www.tdsb.on.ca. A quick link to information about the G20 Summit has been added and will be updated regularly.

Yours truly,

Karen Urban
Principal

Welcome Back!

Dear Parent(s), Guardian (s),

It’s here – another school year at the Island Public/Natural Science School!
Welcome to our new families and welcome back to those of you who are returning from what I hope was a relaxing and enjoyable summer.

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself and say how excited I am to be at the Island Public/Natural Science School. Little did I know while completing my final teaching practicum at no other than the Island Public/Natural Science School so many years ago, that I would once again return to that very same school in the role as Principal. I’m thrilled.

I look forward to working with a dynamic staff, School Council, parents and our broader community in continuing to create a safe, inviting and inclusive environment; an environment where children flourish and our belief in them mirrors their belief in themselves. Our goal as a community – teachers, students, and parents working together – is to maintain the caring school culture we are so proud of. We strive to provide an environment where all students can realize their academic potential as well as their potential to make a difference in their community. We encourage full participation, critical thinking, independence, responsible self-esteem, and appreciation of others. It is this shared effort that provide our students with the tools and skills necessary for the future.

Sincerely,

Karen Urban
